Take a reliable reading
Phone sensor readings are field aids. Use a stable reference, keep the phone aligned, and verify the final installation with the method required for the job.

Select the placement mode
Choose the mode that matches how the phone contacts the pipe or reference surface.

Calibrate on a known reference
Hold the phone still until the reading is stable, then tap Calibrate. Recalibrate after changing the case, placement mode, or working conditions.

Confirm Start to End
Align the phone with the pipe centerline. A reverse-direction warning means the measured fall runs opposite the planned direction.

Wait for sensor preparation
PipeGrade collects an initial set of samples. Keep the phone steady until the Save Reading button becomes available.

Save and verify
Assign the reading to a project, run, or station when needed. Moving or uncalibrated readings are marked as needing verification.
Common questions
These answers cover the issues most likely to affect measurement and saved field records.
Why is Save Reading unavailable?
The button remains unavailable while PipeGrade prepares the motion sensor. Keep the Measure screen open and hold the device steady while the sample counter completes. If it never completes, confirm that motion access is available, close and reopen PipeGrade, and restart the device if needed.
Why does the reading keep moving?
Movement, vibration, an uneven contact surface, a flexible case, and temperature changes can affect the sensor. Remove accessories that prevent firm contact, support the device from a safe position, and allow the reading to settle. You may save a moving reading, but PipeGrade will mark it as needing verification.
What does calibration change?
Calibration stores the current sensor angle as the zero reference for the selected placement mode. It does not change the target slope. Calibrations are mode-specific, so calibrate again whenever the device case or placement method changes.
What does Reverse Direction mean?
The measured slope is rising rather than falling from the run's Start toward its End. Turn the phone 180 degrees or confirm that the planned run direction should be reversed before saving the result.
Can I use imperial and metric units?
Yes. Change the unit system in Settings. PipeGrade converts the displayed values while retaining the same underlying physical values. Imperial targets use inches per foot; metric targets use millimeters per meter.
Where are my projects, readings, and photos stored?
PipeGrade stores projects, measurements, notes, and attached photo copies on your device. iCloud sync is not enabled. Deleting the app may permanently remove this local data, so export any records you need before deleting or replacing the app.
How do I restore PipeGrade Pro?
Open PipeGrade Pro from Settings and tap Restore Purchases while signed in to the App Store with the Apple Account used for the original purchase. PipeGrade Pro is a non-consumable, one-time purchase. If Apple cannot locate it, review your purchase history or contact Apple billing support.
Does PipeGrade certify an installation or code compliance?
No. PipeGrade is a planning, measurement, and record aid. It does not provide engineering certification, permit approval, or a guarantee of code compliance. Local requirements, project documents, and approved instruments take precedence.
Safety and accuracy
Never enter a hazardous trench or climb solely to take a phone reading. Verify final work with a calibrated level, laser, survey instrument, or the method required by the project documents and local authority.
